Background

European equities edged lower in early Monday trading as a surge in oil prices above $90 a barrel, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, renewed investor concerns about inflation.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index was down 0.2% to 640.45 points by 0703 GMT, according to Reuters data. The negative sentiment followed reports of mounting risks to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz amid an ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, which sent Brent crude to its highest level in a month.

Sector Divergence and Corporate Movers

The spike in energy costs created a clear divergence in market sectors. Energy stocks gained 1.4%, benefiting from higher crude prices. Conversely, the travel and leisure sector fell 1.3%, weighed down by the prospect of increased fuel expenses.

Irish budget airline Ryanair was the top decliner on the STOXX 600, with its shares falling 4.6%. The carrier reported a 34% drop in its first-quarter profit, attributing the decline to the dual pressures of higher fuel costs and lower average fares.

Eyes on Tech Earnings and ECB

Looking ahead, market participants are bracing for a pivotal week of corporate and central bank news. While Europe's technology sector saw a modest gain of 0.4%, investors are awaiting earnings reports from U.S. technology giants to provide fresh direction for the market's AI-driven rally.

Attention will also be fixed on the European Central Bank's policy meeting later this week. The consensus expectation is for the central bank to hold its benchmark interest rates steady, a decision that will be closely scrutinized for its implications on the regional economy.
