Background

European diesel profit margins retreated from a historic peak on Thursday, influenced by falling crude oil prices and steady inventory levels in the region's main storage hub.

Margin Pullback

The profit margin for refining diesel, a key metric known as the crack spread, saw the premium of low-sulphur gasoil futures over Brent crude futures fall to $86.66 per barrel as of 16:57 GMT, according to market data. This represents a decline of $2.58 from the previous session's close.

The drop follows a record high set in the prior session, when the spread reached $91.67 per barrel. The pullback suggests a slight easing in the extreme market tightness that has recently driven diesel refining profitability to unprecedented levels.

Regional Inventories and Market Impact

Underlying supply fundamentals showed some stability. Diesel stockpiles in the key Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) refining and storage hub were largely unchanged at approximately 1.65 million metric tons. No imports were recorded during the period, although eight tankers are expected to arrive by the end of the month.

The sustained high cost of diesel is having a tangible impact on the broader economy. In the United States, railroad operator Union Pacific noted on Wednesday that some shippers are shifting freight from trucks to rail to mitigate the impact of high diesel prices. In Europe, the French government is extending targeted subsidies for sectors most affected by elevated fuel costs through the end of the year, according to Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu.
