European Car Sales Jump 13.1% in June on Surging EV Demand

Summary
New car registrations in Europe rose 13.1% in June, fueled by a 51% surge in battery-electric vehicle sales, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. The growth comes as sales of petrol and diesel vehicles continue to decline.
European new car registrations increased by 13.1% in June compared to the same month last year, driven by a dramatic surge in demand for electric vehicles. The data, released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), indicates a continuing recovery in the region's auto market despite ongoing geopolitical and economic pressures.
Electric Vehicles Lead the Charge
The shift away from traditional internal combustion engines accelerated in June, with electrified vehicles accounting for all of the market's growth. Key figures highlight this transition:
- Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations jumped 51.0% year-over-year to 360,843 units.
- Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales rose by 22.7%.
- Hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) sales gained 17.1%.
In stark contrast, demand for traditional powertrains fell sharply. Registrations for petrol cars declined by 12.2%, while diesel car sales dropped by 16.9%.
Broader Market Performance
AdAcross the European Union, EFTA countries, and the United Kingdom, a total of 1.41 million new passenger cars were registered in June, according to the ACEA. The positive result extends the market's growth streak and contributes to a solid first half of the year.
For the first six months of 2026, total registrations in the region reached 7.23 million vehicles, a 6.1% increase compared to the first half of the previous year. Within the EU specifically, BEVs have significantly increased their footprint, now accounting for 20.7% of the market, up from 15.6% a year ago. Hybrids remain the most popular choice, holding a 37.3% market share.
Automaker Highlights
The electric vehicle boom has notably benefited several key automakers. U.S. manufacturer Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) saw its European registrations climb 72.1% in June.
Chinese automakers also continued their rapid expansion into the European market. Registrations for BYD (HK:1211) nearly tripled, while Chery Automobile (HK:9973) posted a massive 271% increase. SAIC Motor (SS:600104), another major Chinese player, recorded sales growth of 50.7%.
