Background

European wheat futures surged more than 4% on Friday to a six-week high, driven by mounting concerns that escalating conflict in the Sea of Azov could disrupt vital grain shipments from Russia, the world's largest wheat exporter.

Prices Hit Six-Week Peak

The benchmark September milling wheat contract on the Paris-based Euronext exchange climbed 4.3% to €213.75 ($244.21) per metric ton as of 1434 GMT. This marked the contract's highest price level since May 26.

The bullish sentiment extended to the U.S. market, where Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) wheat futures also rallied to a six-week peak, according to the source.

Geopolitical Risks Drive Market

The primary catalyst for the price spike is market speculation regarding a potential Russian closure of the Sea of Azov to all shipping operations. Traders are reacting to heightened geopolitical risk in the critical Black Sea region, a major artery for global grain trade.

Concerns have intensified after Ukraine reportedly struck several Russian tankers in the area. While these attacks have targeted energy assets rather than grain infrastructure, any potential escalation threatens to snarl supply chains and halt exports from a key global breadbasket.
