Background

Shares of ESS Tech Inc. (NYSE:GWH) rose sharply in premarket trading Wednesday after the company announced a significant Letter of Intent with Juniper Energy LLC for a long-term energy storage partnership.

Partnership Framework

The agreement establishes a framework for Juniper Energy to deploy 500 megawatt-hours (MWh) or more of ESS's sodium-ion battery energy storage systems by 2032. The collaboration is set to begin with an initial project in California, according to the company's statement.

This first deployment is planned as a 10 megawatt / 80 MWh energy storage project targeted for commercial operation in 2027. The project will utilize ESS’s modular sodium-ion solution, known as Bridge, and its associated Energy Management System.

Market Reaction and Outlook

Investors responded positively to the news, with ESS Tech's stock jumping 9.2% in premarket trading. The agreement signals significant commercial traction for the company's non-lithium battery technology and establishes a long-term procurement pipeline with a key energy partner.

"This agreement with Juniper Energy validates ESS’s strategy to expand our technology portfolio and bring sodium-ion energy storage to market," said Drew Buckley, CEO of ESS. He noted that the deal reflects "accelerating customer demand" for alternatives to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Strategic Significance

ESS Tech specializes in energy storage solutions that avoid lithium, instead using abundant and domestically available materials. The company highlights that its sodium-ion technology is designed to mitigate exposure to geopolitical supply chain risks and regulations related to Foreign Entities of Concern (FEOC).

This strategy positions ESS to support the development of domestic energy infrastructure for applications including utility-scale storage, AI data centers, and commercial facilities. The deal with Juniper Energy represents a key validation of this approach in the competitive energy storage market.
