Entain to Cut 400 Jobs, Warns UK Government on Further Tax Hikes

Summary
The Ladbrokes owner announced plans to reduce its customer care workforce by 20% amid rising fiscal pressures and urged UK officials to reconsider potential new gambling taxes.
Entain PLC (LON:ENT), the parent company of Ladbrokes, announced plans on Wednesday to eliminate approximately 400 customer care positions and has formally warned the UK government about the negative impact of potential new tax increases on the gambling sector.
Cost-Cutting and Industry Warnings
The company confirmed the job cuts will affect about 20% of its 2,000-employee customer care division. Entain stated these measures are part of an effort to manage the financial impact of increased gambling taxes already levied on the industry.
In a letter dated September 11, Entain Chief Executive Stella David urged the government to weigh the consequences of further tax hikes. The letter specifically addressed concerns over a potential increase in the Machine Games Duty, a tax on revenues from slot machines in betting shops, ahead of the next budget announcement.
"A further doubling of Machine Games Duty would therefore add another significant cost to businesses already struggling to absorb major tax increases, stacking the odds against labour-intensive high-street operators," David said in the letter.
AdFiscal and Regulatory Headwinds
Entain's actions come as the sector faces significant fiscal pressure. The company's warning follows a previous government decision in November to raise gaming duties to 40% and online sports betting levies to 25%, which has compressed profit margins for operators, according to reports.
The industry now faces the prospect of additional tax burdens, with media reports suggesting that slot machines are a likely target in the government's upcoming budget. For investors, Entain's pre-emptive cost-cutting highlights the persistent regulatory and fiscal risks facing UK-focused gambling firms, signaling concerns over future profitability and the viability of physical retail locations.
