Elon Musk's Super PAC Spends Over $800,000 on Key Republican Midterm Races

A political action committee funded by SpaceX founder Elon Musk has spent more than $800,000 on campaign materials for over a dozen Republican candidates in key congressional races ahead of the midterm elections. The spending by America PAC, which is backed by a $50 million fund from Musk, marks its first major financial activity for the 2026 election cycle, according to a filing reported by Reuters.
Spending Breakdown and Key Beneficiaries
The disclosed expenditures were for "printing," indicating the funds were used for direct mail, canvassing literature, and other physical campaign materials. The spending was concentrated in Texas, where SpaceX is headquartered, and other battleground states.
Key recipients of the support include:
- Ken Paxton (Texas Senate race): Received $247,595 in support for his race against Democrat James Talarico.
- Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine): Her campaign was supported with $170,224.
- Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio): Received $105,675 worth of materials for his reelection bid.
Notably, both Collins and Husted are members of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, which oversees federal spending and controls funding for government contracts, including those awarded to Musk's companies like SpaceX.
Strategic Focus on Influential Committees
AdThe PAC's spending pattern suggests a strategic focus on lawmakers with oversight of Musk's business interests. Support was also directed to Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is responsible for the Pentagon's budget.
In the House of Representatives, America PAC backed several Republican members of the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, and Homeland Security committees. These include Reps. Scott Perry and Ryan Mackenzie of Pennsylvania, Tom Kean of New Jersey, Jennifer Kiggans of Virginia, Mike Lawler of New York, and Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin.
Political Reaction
The spending has drawn criticism from Democrats. America PAC spent over $90,000 on materials opposing U.S. Representative Chris Pappas, who is running for a New Hampshire Senate seat. In a statement to Reuters, Pappas’ campaign manager Rachel Petri said, “MAGA Republicans like Elon Musk are trying to buy this Senate seat for John Sununu because they know he would be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s toxic agenda.”
A spokesperson for Rep. Mackenzie's campaign stated they had not coordinated with any super PACs. Representatives for Husted and other Republican candidates did not immediately return requests for comment, while America PAC and SpaceX also declined to comment.
