Background

Norwegian silicon producer Elkem reported second-quarter earnings that surpassed analyst expectations, even as profits fell significantly from the previous year amid declining prices for its core products. The company's cost-cutting measures and a recent capital raise provided positive counterpoints to the challenging market conditions.

Quarterly Performance Breakdown

Elkem posted second-quarter earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of NOK 523 million, well ahead of the average analyst forecast of NOK 377 million, according to its Friday report. However, this figure represents a 19% decline compared to the same period last year.

The company's operating income for the quarter was NOK 3.71 billion, a 4% decrease from the prior year. Elkem attributed the year-over-year decline in results primarily to lower sales prices for its silicon and ferrosilicon products, which offset other operational gains.

Cost Controls and Corporate Actions

Elkem reported that its ongoing cost reduction program is yielding results that have exceeded initial targets. The company now expects organizational streamlining and other cuts to generate annual savings of more than NOK 600 million.

During the quarter, Elkem also strengthened its financial position by completing a NOK 1.8 billion equity raise and successfully refinancing its main bank facilities. These actions provide greater financial flexibility for the company amid market headwinds.

Segment Performance and Outlook

Looking ahead, Elkem anticipates a mixed performance across its divisions. The company projects that seasonally lower activity will impact its Silicon Products division in the third quarter. The Carbon Solutions segment, which saw lower EBITDA in Q2 from reduced sales volume and prices, is expected to maintain a generally stable financial performance in the coming quarter.

Elkem stated that its enhanced cost reduction program will continue to make a positive contribution to results starting in the third quarter, helping to mitigate the impact of market softness.
