Elementl Power Secures Up to $200M From Korean Investors for SMR Push

Elementl Power's effort to raise $750 million for its small modular reactor (SMR) projects has received a significant boost from South Korean investors. The backing addresses the growing need for new power sources to support the energy-intensive demands of the artificial intelligence industry.
Korean Consortium Leads Investment
A consortium led by DS Investment Partners has pledged up to $200 million to advance the development of up to three of Elementl’s nuclear projects, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. Additionally, Samsung C&T Corp. is committing capital and is in talks to provide engineering support for the initiative.
This fundraising round serves as a key test of private capital's appetite for financing early-stage atomic power development, which requires substantial upfront investment long before facilities become operational.
Funding Early-Stage Development
Elementl intends to use the funds for the initial phases of its utility-scale buildouts, covering essential work that must be completed before customers sign power purchase agreements. The company's CEO, Chris Colbert, told Bloomberg that the goal is for this early-stage backing to pave the way for more traditional project financing in the future.
AdOne of the firm's flagship projects is in Meigs County, Ohio, a former coal mining region. Elementl plans to deploy SMRs designed by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy at the site, which will have the capacity to supply up to 1.5 gigawatts of electricity.
Market Context and Challenges
The move into advanced nuclear power is driven by record demand for electricity from data centers, a direct result of the rapid expansion of AI applications. However, the sector faces considerable hurdles.
- Commercial Viability: SMRs have not yet been implemented at a commercial scale in the United States, making any new project a pioneering effort.
- Regulatory and Capital Hurdles: New entrants face a lengthy and complex process to secure operating licenses, in addition to the challenge of raising the immense capital required for construction.
Elementl, founded in 2022, is also backed by investment firms Energy Impact Partners and T. Rowe Price Group.
