Background

Italian metalworker unions have called for a strike at Electrolux facilities across the country on September 15, escalating a dispute over the home appliance maker's proposed restructuring plan. The action follows a breakdown in negotiations between the company and labor representatives.

Breakdown in Negotiations

The unions FIM, FIOM, and UILM announced the strike in a joint statement after two days of talks with Electrolux at Italy's industry ministry failed to produce a resolution. According to the statement, the company has not withdrawn its plans for significant layoffs or its proposal to close a key manufacturing plant.

The unions are demanding that Electrolux reverse its decision to shutter its kitchen hood-making facility in Cerreto, central Italy. They have also called for the company to abandon its plan for widespread job cuts as part of the corporate overhaul.

Restructuring Plan Details

Electrolux first announced its restructuring plan in May, outlining measures that could impact up to 1,700 positions in Italy. At that time, the company confirmed its intention to close the Cerreto plant, a move the unions have strongly opposed.

In addition to the nationwide strike, the unions have also organized a protest to be held outside the Cerreto facility on the same day. They warned that further industrial action could be called if the company does not withdraw its plan for job cuts and divestment in the country.
