Dutch AEX Index Slips as Semiconductor Sell-Off Weighs on Market

Summary
The Netherlands' benchmark AEX index closed lower on Monday, dragged down by significant losses in major technology and semiconductor stocks despite a larger number of advancing shares on the exchange.
Amsterdam's benchmark AEX index closed down 0.82% on Monday, as a sharp downturn in heavyweight technology stocks overshadowed broader market gains. The decline was primarily driven by weakness in the technology, oil & gas, and basic materials sectors, according to closing data.
Tech Stocks Lead Declines
The technology sector was the primary driver of the index's negative performance. Several major semiconductor firms experienced significant losses, weighing heavily on the AEX.
- BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI) was the session's worst performer, falling 9.65%.
- ASML Holding (ASML), a key index component, declined by 8.42%.
- ASM International (ASMI) also saw a substantial drop, closing down 7.10%.
Divergent Market Performance
Despite the headline index decline, market breadth was positive, with 50 stocks on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange rising compared to 46 that fell. This indicates that the losses were concentrated in a few large-cap names rather than a widespread market sell-off.
AdAmong the top performers were:
- Wolters Kluwer (WLSNc), which gained 7.85%.
- Relx PLC (REL), adding 4.79%.
- Adyen NV (ADYEN), which rose 4.34%.
Broader Market Context
The sell-off in the energy sector corresponded with a significant drop in global oil prices. Crude oil futures for September delivery fell by more than 6%, while Brent oil for October delivery also saw a sharp decline. Meanwhile, the AEX Volatility index, a measure of market uncertainty, remained unchanged at 21.09, suggesting the day's equity moves did not signal broader market panic. In currency markets, the EUR/USD and EUR/GBP pairs were little changed.
