Background

The U.S. dollar reversed its course to finish lower on Wednesday, as minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting were perceived by investors as more dovish than anticipated, overshadowing earlier safe-haven demand.

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, fell 0.1% to 100.99, according to Investing.com data.

Fed Minutes Signal Policy Uncertainty

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting revealed a deeply divided committee grappling with high uncertainty over the economic outlook. While some participants argued for an immediate interest rate increase last month, the broader debate showed significant caution about future policy.

According to the meeting summary, "most" participants saw scenarios where inflation would return toward the Fed’s 2% target on its own. While they also acknowledged that persistent inflation could warrant "some policy firming," the overall tone was interpreted as less aggressive than expected. The Fed held its benchmark federal funds rate steady at 3.50%-3.75% at the June meeting.

"What stands out most in the minutes is the fairly DOVISH tone on the monetary policy outlook," said Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge in a note cited by the source. He added that while the language on current inflation was hawkish, the forward-looking discussion leaned more toward potential easing than tightening.

Geopolitical Tensions Provide Early Support

Earlier in the session, the dollar had strengthened as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran spurred demand for safe-haven assets. The U.S. military conducted strikes against Iran following attacks on commercial oil tankers, leading to retaliatory actions and heightened rhetoric from both sides.

President Donald Trump stated that a ceasefire was "over" and warned of further military action. The geopolitical instability pushed global benchmark Brent crude futures briefly above $80 a barrel for the first time since late June.

Movements in Other Major Currencies

The Fed's perceived dovishness influenced other currency pairs, with several major currencies gaining against the dollar.

  • New Zealand Dollar (NZD): The kiwi rose 0.4% to $0.5699 after the country's central bank delivered an expected quarter-point interest rate hike.
  • Australian Dollar (AUD): The Aussie was marginally higher at $0.6930.
  • Japanese Yen (JPY): The yen weakened, with the USD/JPY pair climbing 0.4% to 162.62, keeping the currency in territory where traders watch for potential intervention from Japanese authorities.
