Deutsche Bank Outlines Mixed Q3 Earnings Outlook for Transportation Sector

Summary
Deutsche Bank has adjusted its third-quarter earnings estimates for transportation companies, citing fuel cost timing for railroads and identifying potential outperformers in the trucking and logistics segments.
Deutsche Bank analysts see a mixed earnings landscape for the transportation sector in the third quarter, with performance varying significantly across railroads, trucking, and logistics, according to a research note published Wednesday.
Railroads Face Timing Shift
The bank lowered its third-quarter earnings per share (EPS) forecasts for railroad companies but raised its fourth-quarter estimates by similar amounts. This adjustment is attributed entirely to the timing of fuel surcharge recovery, which shifts profits between quarters rather than altering the full-year outlook.
Deutsche Bank's full-year 2026 estimates for the rail sector remain largely in line with consensus. Among the group, the firm sees the most potential for CSX Corporation to exceed its third-quarter forecast.
Trucking Segments See Divergent Pressures
In the truckload segment, Deutsche Bank is maintaining its forecast for Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings at the high end of the company’s $0.71 to $0.77 EPS guidance range. The bank noted that fuel price volatility likely caused results to fall short of early-quarter expectations, but it views the company favorably heading into Q4, citing expected fuel tailwinds and strong peak season demand.
AdFor less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers, the outlook is more positive:
- Saia Inc is expected to beat estimates, with potential for stronger-than-expected tonnage following its July general rate increase.
- XPO Inc and Old Dominion Freight Line Inc are modeled for in-line results, though the bank sees a possibility for both to surpass expectations, citing improved tonnage trends and a potential boost for XPO from share buyback activity.
Favorable Setup for C.H. Robinson
Analysts view the third-quarter setup for logistics provider C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc as "particularly favorable." The firm is benefiting from lower purchased transportation costs combined with contract repricing that better reflects current market conditions.
Deutsche Bank's forecast for the company's North American Surface Transportation net revenue growth is a high single-digit percentage above consensus estimates. The bank also noted that C.H. Robinson's productivity improvement initiatives continue to make progress.
