Background

Crypto derivatives platform Deribit and trading solutions provider SignalPlus have launched a 35-day trading competition with a prize pool of up to $600,000 USDC. The event, titled "The Island," is the fifth and largest collaboration between the two firms, aimed at attracting and rewarding active retail traders in the options and futures markets.

Competition Structure and Rules

The competition runs from July 6 to August 10, 2026, with registration open until the final day. To be eligible, participants must execute trades on the Deribit platform using the SignalPlus interface. Standings will be determined by trading volume, with a weighting system that favors options activity.

  • Eligible Products: Options and futures contracts.
  • Volume Weighting: Options volume is weighted 1.0, while futures volume is weighted 0.5.
  • Participation: The competition includes both solo and team-based leaderboards.

According to the announcement, the event is organized by DRB Panama Inc. and is not intended for residents of Dubai, UAE.

This year's competition introduces several new mechanics designed to increase daily engagement. A "Mystery Box" feature offers registered users who maintain deposits a chance to win guaranteed USDC prizes. A "Flash Arena" provides reward multipliers and jackpot opportunities specifically for traders of short-dated options, a high-volume segment of the derivatives market.

"The Island brings together everything we want this competition to be: bigger scale, stronger participation loops, and a structure that rewards how active options traders actually engage," said Luuk Strijers, Senior Director from Deribit by Coinbase, in a statement. The prize pool includes high-value items such as a Rolex watch, Apple Vision Pro, and NVIDIA stock, in addition to the headline USDC awards.

Market Context

Trading competitions are a common strategy used by cryptocurrency exchanges to stimulate trading volume, enhance liquidity, and attract new users in a highly competitive market. By partnering with a software provider like SignalPlus, Deribit aims to target sophisticated retail traders who utilize advanced trading tools.

Chris Yu, CEO and Co-Founder of SignalPlus, noted the event is designed to create "a more immersive experience for sophisticated retail traders." The focus on options volume and team-based participation reflects a strategic effort to build a more active and collaborative community on the platform.
