Background

Cryptocurrency derivatives exchange Deribit and trading software firm SignalPlus have launched a new trading competition named "The Island," featuring a prize pool of up to $600,000 USDC. The 35-day event, the fifth collaboration between the two firms, is designed to attract sophisticated retail traders and boost trading activity on the platform.

Competition Structure and Rules

The competition is scheduled to run from July 6, 2026, to August 10, 2026, with registration having opened on June 29, according to a statement from the companies. Participation is open to eligible traders who execute trades on Deribit using the SignalPlus interface.

Rankings will be determined by trading volume, with a specific weighting system in place:

  • Options contracts: Volume weighted at 1.0
  • Futures contracts: Volume weighted at 0.5

This structure places a clear emphasis on options trading, a core market for the Deribit exchange. The event includes both individual and team-based leaderboards, daily missions, and incentives for referrals and high-volume block trades.

Focus on Short-Dated Options

A key feature of this year's competition is the "Flash Arena," which offers reward multipliers for trading in short-dated options. This element is designed to engage traders in a highly active segment of the crypto derivatives market.

"The Island brings together everything we want this competition to be: bigger scale, stronger participation loops, and a structure that rewards how active options traders actually engage," said Luuk Strijers, a Senior Director at Deribit by Coinbase. Chris Yu, CEO of SignalPlus, added that the goal is to create "a more immersive experience for sophisticated retail traders."

Market Context

Trading competitions are a common strategy used by exchanges and trading platforms to stimulate liquidity, attract new users, and increase overall trading volume. By offering a substantial prize pool, Deribit and SignalPlus aim to solidify their positions in the competitive crypto derivatives landscape. The prize pool includes USDC payments as well as physical goods such as a Rolex watch, NVIDIA stock, and an Apple Vision Pro, according to the announcement.
