DAX Edges Up 0.17% in Mixed Trading as Automakers Rally

Germany's DAX index eked out a modest gain to close the week, finishing 0.17% higher in a session marked by divergent sector performance. A strong rally in automotive shares provided the primary lift for the benchmark, while losses in other areas capped the advance.
Session Highlights
At the close in Frankfurt, the blue-chip DAX recorded a minor gain, while the mid-cap MDAX index performed slightly better, rising 0.39%. In contrast, the technology-focused TecDAX index was nearly flat, finishing down just 0.01%.
Market breadth on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange was narrowly positive, with 331 stocks advancing compared to 301 decliners, according to data from Investing.com. The DAX volatility index, a key measure of market anxiety, fell 5.38% to 16.50, suggesting a slight easing of investor concerns.
Automakers Drive Gains, Rheinmetall Slips
The automotive sector was the session's standout performer, providing a significant boost to the main index. Key movers on the DAX included:
Ad- Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p), which surged 6.47%.
- Porsche Automobil Holding SE (PSHG_p), which added 3.61%.
- Online retailer Zalando SE (ZALG) also posted a solid gain of 3.02%.
On the other end of the spectrum, defense contractor Rheinmetall AG (RHMG) was the biggest laggard, falling 3.38%. It was joined in the red by Scout24 AG (G24n) and Merck KGaA (MRCG), which declined 2.12% and 1.45%, respectively.
Broader Market Picture
The day's trading reflected a split sentiment among investors. Gains in the Technology, Food & Beverages, and Retail sectors were offset by weakness in the Construction, Telecoms, and Financial Services industries.
In the mid-cap space, industrial conglomerate Thyssenkrupp AG (TKAG) was a notable gainer, jumping 6.51% to reach a new 5-year high.
