Crypto Stocks Surge as Record $2.7 Billion Short Squeeze Propels Bitcoin Higher

A record-breaking short squeeze liquidated $2.7 billion in cryptocurrency short positions in a 24-hour period, marking the largest such event since 2021. The massive deleveraging event propelled Bitcoin to its highest price since early June and fueled a significant rally in crypto-related equities on Wednesday.
Market Reaction
Bitcoin's price briefly touched $69,900 before climbing further. By Thursday pre-market trading, the leading cryptocurrency stood at $71,396.50, a daily gain of 3.4%. According to crypto data platform Coinglass, over $1 billion in Bitcoin short positions were forcibly closed in approximately one hour, an event the platform described as Bitcoin's "first-ever single-day short liquidation to exceed $1 billion."
The surge lifted shares of companies with exposure to the digital asset market. Notable pre-market gains included:
- Coinbase (COIN): +7.6%
- MicroStrategy (MSTR): +7.8%
- Circle Internet Group: +5.6%
- Robinhood Markets (HOOD): +5.3%
- Marathon Digital (MARA): +4.4%
As a major publicly traded crypto exchange, Coinbase is a direct beneficiary of such volatility, as its revenue is closely tied to trading volumes, which spike during large price movements.
AdRecord Liquidation Event
The wave of liquidations was distributed across major exchanges. Coinglass data showed that within a four-hour window, approximately $517.6 million was liquidated on Binance, followed by $513 million on Hyperliquid and $303 million on Bybit. This rapid unwinding of bearish bets forces short sellers to buy back the underlying asset to cover their positions, adding further upward pressure to the price.
Regulatory and Political Backdrop
The market rally occurred amid significant developments in Washington. According to a Reuters report, President Trump met with several cryptocurrency industry executives at the White House on Wednesday. Attendees reportedly included the CEOs of Coinbase and Robinhood, a co-CEO of Kraken, and the founders of Gemini. During the meeting, the President reportedly urged Congress to advance crypto legislation.
This follows an August 18th release by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of a 402-page proposed rule for regulating crypto assets. The proposal outlines new pathways for crypto firms to raise capital under federal exemptions. While the regulatory environment has been shifting since the start of the administration, comprehensive market structure legislation has yet to pass Congress. A procedural vote on a key bill is reportedly scheduled for September 15.
