Crypto Exchange BitMEX to Cease Operations in September

Cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX announced it will cease all operations on September 23, according to a company post on the social media platform X. The firm assured clients that their assets remain safe and under their control, urging users to withdraw funds before the shutdown.
Strategic Review Prompts Closure
The decision to close the exchange was made by its parent company, HDR Global Trading, as part of a "strategic review of the business," the company stated. BitMEX has instructed all users to close their outstanding positions and withdraw their funds from the platform ahead of the final operating day.
Background of Regulatory Scrutiny
AdThe shutdown follows a period of significant legal and regulatory challenges for the company. In 2022, BitMEX co-founders Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed pleaded guilty to federal charges in the U.S. for failing to establish and maintain an anti-money laundering (AML) program compliant with the Bank Secrecy Act.
Once a dominant force in the cryptocurrency derivatives market, BitMEX's market share has diminished over the years amidst intensified competition and the shadow of its regulatory issues. This closure marks the end of operations for one of the crypto industry's pioneering, yet controversial, trading platforms.
