Copper Mining Stocks Decline as Metal Prices Pull Back From Record

Background

U.S.-listed shares of major copper mining companies dropped in premarket trading Thursday, tracking a swift reversal in the price of the industrial metal after it touched a new record high earlier in the session.

Copper Retreats from Peak

The sell-off in mining equities followed a downturn in the underlying commodity market. According to the London Metal Exchange, benchmark three-month copper fell 3.1% to $14,312 per metric ton. The decline came after the metal had reached an all-time high of $14,875 earlier in the day.

The price reversal was reportedly linked to news that the White House has not yet made a decision on imposing tariffs on refined copper. The reports indicated that officials are weighing concerns that higher input costs could negatively impact U.S. manufacturing.

The drop in copper prices had a direct and significant impact on the shares of producers, whose profitability is closely tied to the commodity's value. The declines were broad-based across the sector:

  • Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) fell approximately 8%.
  • Southern Copper (SCCO) declined 6.5%.
  • Teck Resources (TECK) dropped 7.7%.
  • Hudbay Minerals (HBM) lost 6.2%.

Global diversified mining giants also felt the pressure, with U.S.-listed shares of BHP Group (BHP) falling 4.2% and Rio Tinto (RIO) declining 3.8%. The sharp pullback suggests investors are taking profits after a strong rally and reassessing valuations amid the commodity's price volatility.
