Background

Fintech and payments platform CoinZoom has reported a significant increase in the use of its crypto-backed debit card, with the average number of transactions per active cardholder roughly tripling in the first half of 2026. The company attributes this growth to consumers leveraging the card's rewards program to offset persistently high costs for everyday goods.

Consumer Response to Inflation

According to a statement from CoinZoom, the average debit card user earned $150 per month in rewards during the first half of the year. The company suggests that in a high-inflation environment, consumers are actively seeking financial products that provide tangible returns on ordinary spending.

"At 5% back, a family spending $2,000 a month on everyday purchases earns up to $100 in rewards," said Todd Crosland, CoinZoom's founder and CEO. "At today’s gas prices, that covers roughly two full tanks. For most households, that’s a real number."

This trend occurs against a challenging economic backdrop. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that consumer food-at-home prices have risen approximately 23% between 2022 and 2025. Meanwhile, the American Automobile Association (AAA) notes that national gas prices, currently averaging $4.09 per gallon, are up 30% from the same week last year.

A Growing Market for Crypto Cards

CoinZoom's performance is part of a broader industry trend toward stablecoin-funded and crypto-linked debit cards. Data from analytics firm Paymentscan shows that monthly payment volume on these cards grew 163% year-over-year, climbing from $233 million in May 2025 to $614 million in May 2026.

Cumulatively, tracked payment volume on such cards has now reached nearly $8.2 billion, according to Paymentscan. This growth highlights a shift in consumer behavior, as traditional debit cards typically offer no rewards, and the average interest rate on rewards credit cards has surpassed 20%, potentially negating the value of cashback or points for users who carry a balance.
