Citi's Bullish CPU Forecast Spurs Broad Rally in Semiconductor Stocks

Semiconductor stocks surged on Tuesday after analysts at Citi released a highly optimistic outlook for the sector, projecting massive growth in the central processing unit (CPU) market. The bullish report sparked a broad rally, lifting the PHLX Semiconductor Index by 1.6% and sending shares of key chipmakers like Intel and Advanced Micro Devices significantly higher.
Citi's Bullish Forecast
Ahead of its 2026 Global TMT conference, Citi issued a report raising its estimate for the total addressable market (TAM) for CPUs to $237 billion by 2030. This represents a 52% compound annual growth rate from an estimated $29 billion market in 2025.
Citi's forecast is notably more aggressive than projections from major industry players. It surpasses market size estimates of $220 billion from ARM Holdings, $200 billion from Nvidia, and $100 billion from AMD. The brokerage stated it is "more constructive on the innovation" occurring in the server CPU space.
Market Reacts to Upbeat Outlook
The market responded swiftly to the upgraded forecast, with investors bidding up shares of companies positioned to capitalize on the projected growth. Citi identified AMD as the "key beneficiary of the CPU renaissance" and Intel as a "secondary beneficiary."
AdKey stock movements on Tuesday included:
- Intel (INTC): Jumped 9.8%
- Advanced Micro Devices (AMD): Climbed 6.6%
- ARM Holdings (ARM): Gained 4.7%
Broader Sector Gains
The positive sentiment extended beyond CPU designers to other parts of the semiconductor ecosystem, particularly optical technology companies. These firms supply critical components for data centers and communications infrastructure, which are central to the CPU growth narrative.
Gains in the optical sub-sector were pronounced, with Lumentum surging 12.6%, Coherent rising 8.8%, and Applied Optoelectronics gaining approximately 8%.
