Citigroup Expands Instant Cross-Border Payments to Partner Banks with Siam Commercial Bank Transaction

Summary
Citigroup processed its first instant international dollar payment with a partner institution, Thailand’s Siam Commercial Bank, signaling a key expansion of its real-time global payments network for corporate clients.
Citigroup has successfully completed its first instant cross-border payment in U.S. dollars with a partner bank, marking a significant step in expanding its real-time payments capabilities beyond its own network. The landmark transaction was conducted with Thailand’s Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), according to a statement from Citigroup.
Landmark Transaction Details
The initial transaction demonstrated the network's 24/7 capabilities, occurring over the U.S. July 4th holiday weekend. It involved a client of SCB, Phillip Securities Thailand, executing an instant transfer of funds.
- The payment moved U.S. dollars from a Citigroup account in the United Kingdom.
- The funds were credited instantly to a Siam Commercial Bank account in Thailand.
This successful test highlights the potential for multinational clients to bypass traditional payment delays associated with different time zones, banking hours, and holidays.
Strategic Expansion and Context
AdSiam Commercial Bank is one of 300 financial institutions integrated with Citi’s international instant payments network, which is part of the bank's global Services division. The expansion to third-party banks is a direct response to growing demand from corporate treasurers for more efficient liquidity management.
Debopama Sen, Citi’s Head of Payments, noted rising client interest in instant international transfers between accounts at different banks. While this external network is new, Citi already processes a significant volume of real-time payments internally. The bank currently handles $1 billion daily in instant international transfers for companies moving funds between their own Citigroup accounts.
Implications for Global Payments
This development is part of a broader industry trend to upgrade global payment infrastructure, which has historically relied on slower systems like SWIFT that can take days to clear cross-border transactions. By enabling real-time, 24/7 payments between different banking institutions, Citi aims to provide its multinational clients with greater control over their working capital and reduce settlement risk.
