Citigroup Calls Gold Price Pullback a Buying Opportunity, Reiterates $5,000 Target

Summary
Citigroup analysts maintain a bullish outlook on precious metals, suggesting the recent drop in gold prices presents a strategic entry point for investors and reiterating a 6-to-12-month forecast of $5,000 per ounce.
Citigroup analysts are advising clients to view the recent pullback in gold prices as a buying opportunity, maintaining a bullish stance on precious metals in a new research report. The bank reiterated its price targets, forecasting gold could reach $5,000 per ounce within a year.
Citi's Price Outlook
In the report, Citi set a 0-to-3-month price target for gold at $4,800 per ounce, with a 6-to-12-month forecast of $5,000 per ounce. This guidance was issued as spot gold traded at approximately $4,500 per ounce.
The bank is also bullish on silver, projecting a price of $75 per ounce, compared to its current spot price of around $67.
Market Catalysts and Context
The recent price decline, which Citi frames as an entry point, reportedly followed hawkish remarks from a speaker identified as "Warsh" on Friday, August 29. The report noted that gold's rally in August was somewhat vulnerable, as it was driven more by speculative paper trading than by an increase in physical demand.
AdAccording to the bank, a price floor was established in July, supported by buying from China and ultra-high-net-worth individuals. The report also cited market activity in the Japanese yen and long-end U.S. Treasury bonds as a factor that helped push prices higher.
Key Technical Levels
From a technical perspective, Citi's analysis identified several key support levels for gold investors to monitor. These levels could indicate where prices may find a floor during a downturn.
- 100-day moving average: ~$4,366 per ounce
- 50-day moving average: $4,218 per ounce
- Psychological and tested support: The $4,000 per ounce level, which proved to be a solid base during lighter trading in July.
