Background

Shares of Citic Securities Co Ltd. fell on Tuesday after China's largest brokerage reported a significant drop in third-quarter profit, hurt by weak investment income and sluggish domestic stock markets. The company's Hong Kong-listed shares declined 2.4%, while its Shanghai-listed shares fell nearly 3% following the earnings release on Monday.

Q3 Earnings Miss Expectations

Citic Securities announced that its net profit for the three months ending September 30 fell 20.2% year-over-year to 7.68 billion yuan ($1.15 billion). This figure fell considerably short of the 10.05 billion yuan consensus estimate compiled by Reuters/LSEG, signaling a tougher-than-expected quarter for the firm.

The profit decline was primarily driven by a sharp downturn in investment returns. For the first nine months of the year, the broker's investment income dropped 45.25% to 17.978 billion yuan, reflecting the challenging market conditions.

Market Headwinds Impact Performance

The brokerage's results underscore a difficult period for China's financial markets. Chinese stocks slumped during the third quarter, with the blue-chip CSI 300 index entering a bear market in October amid a broad selloff.

This market weakness dampened investor sentiment, leading to sluggish retail trading volumes. A broader decline in consumer spending and investment further weighed on the firm's trading-related business lines, impacting its bottom line.

Bright Spots in Fee-Based Businesses

Despite the drop in overall profitability, Citic Securities saw robust growth in its fee-generating businesses for the first nine months of the year. This suggests resilience in segments less directly exposed to market volatility.

  • Investment Banking: Fees and commissions rose 38.9% to 5.124 billion yuan, supported by continued IPO activity in mainland and Hong Kong markets.
  • Brokerage Fees: Net fee income from its brokerage business increased by 34.65% to 14.73 billion yuan.
  • Asset Management: The asset management unit also performed well, with income rising 24.86%.
