Background

A reported joint currency intervention by the U.S. Treasury and Japanese authorities, involving the sale of the euro-yen pair, signals strong American support for Tokyo's efforts to defend its currency, according to a note from Citigroup on Tuesday.

A Show of Support

Analysts at the bank view the coordinated action as a significant development that reinforces their long-term optimistic forecast for the Japanese yen. Citigroup stated that the joint intervention is expected to have a "profound impact" on the Bank of Japan's path toward monetary policy normalization and on the government's fiscal policy direction.

This move by the U.S. Treasury to participate directly is seen as a powerful endorsement of Japan's campaign to stabilize the yen, which has faced significant downward pressure.

Key Levels and Forecasts

While the intervention supports a stronger yen over the long run, Citigroup outlined several key levels for the U.S. dollar to Japanese yen (USD/JPY) currency pair. The bank cautioned that a sustained move below the ¥158 level is unlikely in the medium term.

Furthermore, Citigroup warned that the USD/JPY exchange rate faces a risk of rebounding into the ¥160 to ¥162 range once the intervention activity concludes. According to the bank's proprietary two-tier model, the current target for USD/JPY is approximately ¥163.
