Chipotle, Restaurant Brands Tipped for Sales Beat by RBC Capital Markets

RBC Capital Markets sees potential for several major restaurant operators, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Restaurant Brands International, to report stronger comparable sales than the market currently expects. In a note ahead of the upcoming earnings season, the bank highlighted company-specific initiatives like promotional activity and digital engagement as key potential growth drivers.
Top Picks for an Upside Surprise
RBC named Chipotle (NYSE: CMG) one of its "preferred earnings ideas," arguing that consensus estimates for its third- and fourth-quarter comparable sales growth are conservative. The bank's positive view is also supported by the stock's recent underperformance, suggesting a favorable setup for an earnings beat.
For Restaurant Brands International (NYSE: QSR), the parent of Burger King and Tim Hortons, RBC pointed to potentially stronger same-store sales at its Tim Hortons chain. The analysis cited a recent Harry Potter collaboration as a specific sales driver, along with a broadly stable macroeconomic environment compared to the prior quarter.
The bank also expects stronger same-store sales at the privately held Jersey Mike's Subs, supported by its limited-time offers and continued digital momentum.
A More Cautious Stance on Peers
AdRBC's outlook was more measured for other companies in the sector. While Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) is anticipated to deliver another solid quarter, the bank noted this performance is likely already priced into the stock and is "largely anticipated by the market."
Similarly, while fitness and lifestyle brand Life Time (NYSE: LTH) is expected to beat earnings expectations and raise its outlook, RBC sees "no obvious near-term catalyst" that would cause a significant revaluation of its share price.
Conversely, the bank expressed caution on Wingstop (NASDAQ: WING). It cited the chain's exposure to consumers who are more sensitive to elevated gasoline prices, which could constrain discretionary spending and impact sales.
What It Means for Investors
The research underscores a potential divergence in performance across the restaurant industry as companies prepare to report quarterly results. According to RBC, company-specific sales drivers may allow certain brands to outperform, while others remain more vulnerable to broader consumer spending pressures. This highlights the importance of individual stock selection within the sector rather than a monolithic view of consumer health.
