Background

Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot is considering a dual listing in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday, citing two people familiar with the matter. The move would expand the fundraising options for the prominent developer of the Kimi large language model, which reportedly filed confidentially for a Hong Kong IPO last week.

Dual-Listing Strategy Emerges

According to the SCMP report, Moonshot has discussed a potential Hong Kong initial public offering with its financial backers. The company has also raised the possibility of a subsequent listing on the mainland, likely targeting the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s Science and Technology Innovation Board, known as the STAR Market.

One of the sources cited by the newspaper suggested that talks with the Shanghai bourse could begin soon. The exploration of a mainland listing may be a strategic response to weaker performance among Hong Kong-listed AI stocks and a crowded IPO pipeline in the city, the report added.

Fundraising in a Global AI Boom

A listing by Moonshot would join a global wave of capital raising by AI-focused companies. Reuters previously reported that the Beijing-based firm aims to raise as much as $3 billion from its Hong Kong listing alone. This follows the Hong Kong IPOs of other Chinese AI firms, including Z.AI and MiniMax, earlier this year.

Globally, the market for AI investment remains active, with competitors like Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI model, also reportedly preparing for a public offering. Moonshot's Kimi K3 model, launched in July, has seen strong demand, and the company is reportedly in talks with Microsoft, Amazon, and Google for revenue-sharing agreements to host its model on their cloud platforms.
