Chewy Stock Slips as In-Line Earnings Disappoint After Pre-Report Rally

Shares of Chewy, Inc. (CHWY) slipped in pre-market trading after the online pet retailer posted second-quarter financial results that matched analyst forecasts but failed to deliver the upside surprise many investors had priced in.
The stock's decline occurred despite the company raising its full-year outlook, illustrating a classic "sell the news" scenario where high expectations built into a stock's price are not sufficiently met by the actual results.
Quarterly Results Meet Expectations
For its fiscal second quarter, Chewy reported results that were largely in line with Wall Street consensus, according to Investing.com.
- Adjusted Earnings Per Share (EPS): $0.36, matching analyst estimates.
- Net Sales: $3.33 billion, a slight beat over the $3.32 billion consensus and representing 7.3% year-over-year growth.
- Adjusted EBITDA: $226.7 million, significantly ahead of the $212.1 million forecast, with the margin expanding to 6.8%.
- Gross Margin: 30.4%, flat compared to the same period last year.
AdWhile the stronger-than-expected adjusted EBITDA was a positive, the in-line EPS and flat gross margin did not provide the strong beat needed to sustain recent momentum.
Market Reaction and Forward Guidance
The market's muted response was influenced by several factors. Chewy's stock had rallied more than 15% in the month leading into the report, setting a high bar for performance. The company's third-quarter revenue guidance of $3.32 billion to $3.36 billion was only a narrow beat over consensus, which failed to inspire further buying.
CEO Sumit Singh attributed the company's decision to raise its full-year outlook to "the durability of our recurring revenue base, continued customer growth, and disciplined execution." However, this optimism was overshadowed by the stock's elevated positioning and analyst concerns over a reported decline in corporate liquidity. Broader market weakness, with major U.S. indices trading lower, also contributed to a risk-off sentiment for consumer discretionary stocks like Chewy.
