Background

Shares of Capstone Green Energy (NASDAQ:CEPL) fell 2.6% in premarket trading on Wednesday, even as the company announced a new lease agreement with oil and gas operator Maurel & Prom for a flare gas recovery project in Gabon.

Details of the Gabon Project

Under the terms of the deal, Capstone will provide a C600 Signature Series microturbine for a flare gas valorization project at an onshore asset in West Africa. The equipment will convert associated gas, which would otherwise be flared into the atmosphere, into electricity to power the platform's operations.

The project is structured under Capstone’s Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) business model, utilizing a 36-month Lease-to-Own offering. According to the company, commissioning for the microturbine is expected in November 2026.

Strategic Rationale and Market Reaction

The agreement is designed to address both environmental and operational challenges for energy producers. "For operators like Maurel & Prom, flare gas valorization solves two problems at once: it eliminates a meaningful source of emissions and generates the reliable power that remote operations depend on," said Vince Canino, President and CEO of Capstone Energy+.

The lease structure allows Maurel & Prom to access the equipment with fixed periodic payments while preserving capital. Despite the strategic nature of the deal, the market's initial reaction was negative, sending the company's shares lower in early trading.

Capstone's Technology

Capstone's microturbine platform is engineered to operate continuously on variable-composition fuel streams, including the associated gas targeted in this project. The company highlights its technology's low maintenance needs, which stem from a single-moving-part, air-bearing design that requires no oil or coolant.

To date, Capstone has shipped more than 10,800 units to customers across 89 countries, serving industrial, commercial, and data center applications through its global distributor network.
