Background

Shares of Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:CSIQ) rose 6.3% in Thursday trading after the company announced its U.S.-manufactured solar modules earned a key certification for durability against severe hail. The recognition from third-party testing agency FM Approvals marks a first for the industry and addresses growing concerns over extreme weather risks for solar energy projects.

Certification Details

Canadian Solar reported that its TOPCon and HJT Low Carbon hail-resilient products are the first photovoltaic modules to be listed by FM Approvals as identified components for severe hail zones. The listing was granted under the FM 4478 and FM 4480 identified component standards.

To achieve the certification, the modules underwent a series of rigorous evaluations. According to the company, the process included:

  • Hail damage resistance testing per ANSI/FM Approvals Standard 4480.
  • Design qualification testing in line with IEC/EN 61215 series standards.
  • Safety qualification testing according to IEC/EN 61730-2 and ANSI/UL 61730 requirements.

Implications for Solar Projects

The FM Approvals listing provides independent validation of the modules' resilience, which is a critical factor for developers, asset owners, and investors. The certification is intended to help mitigate hail-related project risks, improve the insurability of solar assets, and support reliable long-term energy production.

"As extreme weather events become more frequent, resilience is increasingly critical to solar project success," said Dr. Shawn Qu, Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Canadian Solar, in a statement. He added that the listing demonstrates the company's commitment to delivering products that "help customers mitigate risk, improve project bankability, and ensure reliable long-term operation of their solar assets."
