BW Energy Shares Slide After Fatal Drilling Rig Accident Halts Gabon Production

BW Energy (BWE.OL) shares tumbled nearly 8.8% in Oslo trading after a contracted drilling rig sank at its primary production asset offshore Gabon over the weekend, resulting in one fatality and leaving four workers unaccounted for.
The incident prompted an immediate halt to production and has cast uncertainty over the company's near-term operational plans just days before its scheduled third-quarter earnings release.
Details of the Incident
In a regulatory disclosure, BW Energy confirmed that the Prospector 5, a jack-up rig owned by Borr Drilling, sank on the evening of Saturday, October 24. The accident occurred during jacking operations in preparation for a new drilling campaign at the Dussafu Marine licence.
As a standard safety precaution, production at the nearby MaBoMo facility was shut down prior to the incident. The company reported that there was no damage to its production facilities and no harmful environmental discharges have been detected.
Market and Financial Impact
AdThe market reaction was swift and severe, with BW Energy's stock price falling to NOK 60.3. The operational disruption at the Dussafu licence, in which BW Energy holds a 73.5% working interest, is a significant blow for the company.
- An analyst at Arctic Securities estimated the accident could reduce BW Energy's underlying per-share value by approximately NOK 3.
- Licence partner Panoro Energy (PEN.OL), which holds a 17.5% stake, also saw its shares fall sharply in response to the news.
Broader Context
The timing of the accident is particularly challenging for BW Energy, which is set to report its Q3 2026 earnings on October 29. Investors were already scrutinizing the company's performance after its Q3 production of approximately 21,500 barrels per day came in below the lower end of its full-year guidance.
This serious operational setback at its most important producing asset, combined with pre-existing concerns about its production trajectory, has created significant downward pressure on the stock.
