Background

BNP Paribas posted third-quarter net income that surpassed analyst expectations, driven by a record performance in its equity trading division, and announced plans for a new €1.3 billion share buyback program.

The eurozone's largest bank by assets reported a net income of €3.46 billion, a 14% increase from the same period last year. This figure comfortably beat the average analyst forecast of €3.23 billion, according to a poll conducted by the bank. Revenue for the quarter rose to €13.76 billion, also slightly ahead of expectations.

Investment Bank Drives Growth

The strong results were largely propelled by the bank's corporate and institutional banking (CIB) unit, where overall sales grew by 17% year-over-year. A standout performer was the equity and prime services business, which saw revenue surge by a record 50%, outpacing the average gains reported by major U.S. investment banks for the period.

In contrast, revenue from fixed-income, currencies, and commodities (FICC) trading was flat, reflecting a broader industry-wide slowdown in that segment. The bank's retail business also contributed positively, with income rising by 4% as it benefited from higher interest rates.

Capital Returns and Market Context

BNP Paribas unveiled a €1.3 billion ($1.45 billion) share repurchase program set to begin in November. The bank stated the move follows its success in meeting its Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio, a key measure of financial strength, ahead of schedule at the end of June.

BNP's positive report comes during a crucial earnings week for European lenders and offers a contrast to peers like HSBC, which recently disappointed investors. The bank also addressed investor concerns regarding the impact of soaring sovereign bond yields, stating its exposure to French government bonds was limited at approximately €19 billion as of the end of September.
