Block Shares Rise After Filing for National Crypto Trust Bank Charter

Shares of Block Inc. climbed 2.9% in after-hours trading after the company revealed it has applied to federal regulators to charter a new national trust bank focused on digital asset custody.
The Proposed Bank
Block filed an application with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish an entity named Builders Bank & Trust, N.A. The proposed institution is designed to be a specialized, non-lending bank providing custody and fiduciary services for bitcoin and stablecoins.
Key characteristics of the proposed bank include:
- It would be an uninsured, non-deposit-taking institution.
- It would not make loans or accept traditional customer deposits.
- Its primary function is to bring Block's existing digital asset custody activities under a consistent, federally supervised framework as the business scales.
AdMarket Reaction
The stock's after-hours jump was a direct response to the corporate announcement, standing in contrast to the broader market's performance. During the regular session, the S&P 500 was essentially flat, while the Dow Jones and Nasdaq Composite both finished slightly lower, indicating that Block's move was driven by company-specific factors rather than a market-wide trend.
For investors, the application signals a clear and proactive regulatory strategy for Block's digital asset ambitions. This move to seek a national charter from the OCC is seen as a step toward legitimizing and securing its crypto operations within the U.S. financial system, a trend that has gained momentum since late 2025.
