BitMEX to Cease Operations on September 23

Cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX announced it will permanently cease operations on September 23. The decision was made by its parent company, HDR Global Trading, following a strategic review of the business, according to a company statement.
Shutdown Details
In an announcement posted on the social media platform X, BitMEX confirmed the closure date and urged users to close all open positions and withdraw their funds before the platform goes offline. The company stated that user assets are currently safe and remain under the control of their respective owners.
The decision to wind down the platform stems from a "strategic review" conducted by HDR Global Trading. BitMEX, once a dominant force in the crypto derivatives market, has faced increased competition and significant regulatory scrutiny over the years.
AdRegulatory Background
The closure follows years of legal challenges for the company's leadership. In 2022, co-founders Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act.
The specific charge was the willful failure to establish, implement, and maintain an adequate anti-money laundering (AML) program. This case highlighted the increasing focus of U.S. authorities on ensuring crypto exchanges comply with traditional financial regulations.
