Bitcoin's Next Adoption Wave May Come From Retirement Accounts, sFOX Executive Says

The next major wave of Bitcoin adoption may originate from an unlikely source: retirement accounts. According to an executive at crypto infrastructure company sFOX, institutional investors are moving beyond the debate of *if* they should own digital assets and are now focused on *how* to incorporate them into established investment structures like IRAs.
Shift From 'If' to 'How'
The conversation around institutional crypto adoption has fundamentally changed, said Diana Pires, Chief Commercial Officer at sFOX, in an interview with Investing.com. The question is no longer about speculative price movements but about building the necessary infrastructure to include digital assets as a legitimate part of a diversified portfolio.
"The institutions are here. The question was never if they were using crypto, but how they were adopting it. It's just another asset class," Pires stated. This shift signifies a deeper integration of crypto into the mainstream financial system, driven by demand for access within existing, regulated frameworks.
The Retirement Market Challenge
The U.S. Individual Retirement Account (IRA) market, valued at over $12 trillion, presents a massive opportunity but also a unique challenge due to the lower risk tolerance of retirement savers. Bitcoin's history of significant drawdowns, sometimes exceeding 50%, is manageable for a hedge fund but unacceptable for a typical retirement portfolio.
"You can't just slap crypto into a retirement account the way you would a normal trading account," Pires explained. This has spurred demand for sophisticated infrastructure that provides:
Ad- Institutional-grade custody and liquidity aggregation
- Licensing and regulatory compliance
- Advanced API access and sub-account management
- Tools to carefully manage exposure and mitigate volatility
As an example of this trend, sFOX is providing infrastructure for the firm Animus, which actively manages Bitcoin exposure for over 1,000 IRA accounts.
Broader Tailwinds for Adoption
The recent approval and widespread discussion of spot Bitcoin ETFs have played a crucial role in familiarizing traditional investors with the asset class. Pires noted that ETFs provide access to crypto exposure through a product structure that investors already understand, supported by a more accommodating regulatory environment.
Furthermore, ongoing public discussions about crypto regulation in the U.S. are helping to legitimize digital assets, moving their perception away from speculative meme coins toward a serious financial instrument. Looking ahead, Pires identified the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA) as another significant growth area, though its development will largely depend on future regulatory clarity.
