Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 as Dollar Debasement Fears Fuel Rally

Bitcoin surged past the $80,000 mark to a three-month high on Tuesday, as investor concerns over U.S. fiscal policy and the long-term health of the dollar fueled a flight to alternative assets. The rally reflects a growing market narrative that views cryptocurrencies as a hedge against potential currency debasement.
Treasury Move Sparks 'Debasement Trade'
The primary catalyst for the rally was a U.S. Treasury announcement last week detailing plans to significantly increase its pace of bond buybacks. This move, intended to manage rising yields, has instead stoked fears among investors that the intervention will come at the expense of the U.S. dollar's value, sparking what is known as a "debasement trade."
According to analysts at OCBC, the Treasury's plan has "shifted the market narrative from higher yields to USD debasement." In a note, they added that this is "fuelling a weaker USD, stronger gold and higher breakevens." This environment has driven capital into assets like gold and cryptocurrencies, which are often perceived as being insulated from traditional bond market turmoil.
By 01:57 ET (05:57 GMT), Bitcoin had climbed 4.7% to $80,760.8, after briefly touching a peak of $81,220.4. The gains marked the eighth positive session in the last nine for the digital asset.
AdShort Squeeze Amplifies Gains
The sharp upward price movement was amplified by a significant short squeeze. Data from Coinglass showed that the rebound liquidated more than $457 million in short Bitcoin positions over the preceding 24 hours. This follows a trend from the previous week where billions in bearish bets were wiped out.
The effect was felt across the crypto market. Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, saw $112.3 million in short positions liquidated over the same period, according to Coinglass data. Other major digital assets also posted strong gains, with Solana surging 7.6% and Cardano jumping 3.3%.
