Bitcoin Slips Below $78,000 as Hawkish Fed Signals, Mideast Tensions Weigh on Markets

Bitcoin's price retreated on Monday, falling under the $78,000 level as a combination of renewed interest rate concerns and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East prompted a cautious, risk-off tone across markets.
As of 9:51 AM ET, Bitcoin was trading down 1.3% at $77,915.1, after touching an intraday low near $77,000, according to data from Investing.com. Despite the session's decline, the leading cryptocurrency remains on track for a monthly gain of nearly 24% for August, following a strong rally in recent weeks.
Macro Headwinds Intensify
Two primary factors are weighing on digital assets. First, hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole economic symposium on Friday reinforced the central bank's commitment to its 2% inflation target. While Warsh did not explicitly detail rate plans, markets interpreted his comments as a signal for further monetary tightening.
According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders are now pricing in a 60.4% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike at the Fed's September meeting. Higher interest rates typically dampen the appeal of speculative, non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. Compounding these concerns, military strikes were exchanged between the U.S. and Iran on Sunday for the first time in over a month, causing oil prices to surge and fueling worries about sustained inflation.
AdBroader Crypto Market and Corporate Activity
Other major cryptocurrencies also posted modest losses on Monday, though they maintained strong monthly gains. Key altcoin performance for August includes:
- Ethereum (ETH): Down 1.5% on the day, but up approximately 31% for the month.
- XRP: Down 3.5%, but holding a monthly gain of 28.4%.
- Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA): Up over 40% and 15% for the month, respectively.
