Background

Bitcoin's price declined on Tuesday, dipping below the $64,000 mark as a combination of macroeconomic uncertainty and specific selling pressure from a major corporate holder weighed on market sentiment. The leading cryptocurrency fell 1.7% to $64,026.3 by 01:48 ET (05:48 GMT), according to data from Investing.com.

Dual Pressures Impact Market

The price drop reflects a broader decline in risk appetite among investors. This caution stems from fading hopes for a U.S.-Iran deal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade route. Contentious stances from both nations have dampened optimism, contributing to geopolitical headwinds for risk assets like cryptocurrencies.

Adding to the selling pressure, MicroStrategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR), the world's largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, disclosed on Monday that it had sold more of its holdings. Such sales by a significant, long-term holder can influence investor sentiment and introduce new supply into the market.

MicroStrategy Sells $109 Million in Bitcoin

MicroStrategy's latest sale involved offloading 1,690 Bitcoin for a total of $109 million. The company stated that the proceeds were used to repurchase 1.15 million shares of its preferred stock. This marks the company's fifth sale of its Bitcoin holdings this year as it raises capital to service its debt and dividend commitments.

Following the transaction, MicroStrategy's Bitcoin hoard stands at 840,447 coins. The company's massive crypto acquisition was financed primarily through debt and preferred stock issuances.

Broader Crypto Market Follows Bitcoin Lower

Most major alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, also traded in the red, tracking Bitcoin's downward movement. The declines highlight the interconnectedness of the digital asset market.

  • Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 2.8% to $1,873.81.
  • XRP and Solana (SOL) declined by 2.6% and 1.5%, respectively.
  • Cardano (ADA) saw a more significant drop of 5.2%.

In a separate development, Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT) announced a $9 billion, 20-year deal to provide computing power to an artificial intelligence lab, later reported by Bloomberg to be Anthropic. The news sent Riot's shares up nearly 25% in after-hours trading, signaling a strategic pivot by some miners toward the high-demand AI sector.
