Bitcoin Slips Below $63,000 as Hawkish Fed Signals and Geopolitical Tensions Spook Markets

Bitcoin's price fell below $63,000 on Friday, erasing its gains for the week amid a broader sell-off in risk assets. The decline was fueled by persistent investor anxiety over the path of U.S. interest rates and heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
By 02:32 ET (06:32 GMT), Bitcoin was trading down 2.8% at $62,924.8, according to Investing.com data. The leading cryptocurrency is now on track for a weekly loss of approximately 1.4% and is down about 28% year-to-date in 2026.
Rate Jitters and Mideast Tensions Weigh on Sentiment
A primary driver for the downturn was a series of hawkish statements from U.S. Federal Reserve officials, which dampened hopes for imminent rate cuts. Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan warned that interest rates may need to rise further, a sentiment echoed by Governor Christopher Waller, who cited concerns over sticky inflation. According to the source, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh also reiterated the central bank's commitment to its 2% inflation target.
An environment of higher interest rates typically weighs on non-yielding, speculative assets like cryptocurrencies by increasing the opportunity cost of holding them. Compounding these fears were worsening military actions between the U.S. and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, which pushed oil prices higher and stoked concerns about long-term inflation.
AdETF Outflows and Broader Market Retreat
Investor sentiment has shifted, as reflected in the flows for spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). After seeing inflows of $197.4 million in the prior week, these funds were on pace for net outflows of $56.6 million this week, according to data from SoSoValue.
The negative sentiment was not confined to Bitcoin, as the broader cryptocurrency market also retreated. Key altcoins posted significant losses:
- Ether (ETH): fell 4.7% to $1,831.68
- Solana (SOL): down 3.6%
- Cardano (ADA): down 2.5%
- XRP: fell 1.7% to $1.0869
