Bitcoin Slides Below $63,000 as U.S.-Iran Tensions, Hawkish Fed Minutes Spook Markets

Bitcoin's price fell more than 2% on Wednesday, dipping to $62,115.3 as escalating military tensions between the U.S. and Iran dampened investor appetite for risk assets. The decline was compounded by minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest meeting, which signaled ongoing uncertainty and the potential for further interest rate hikes.
Geopolitical Tensions Drive Risk-Off Sentiment
Investor sentiment soured following a significant escalation in the Middle East. The U.S. military conducted strikes against Iran on Tuesday in retaliation for attacks on commercial oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting retaliatory strikes from Iran. According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump stated at a NATO summit that a ceasefire with Iran was now "over."
The heightened conflict spurred a flight from riskier assets like cryptocurrencies and a surge in oil prices. Brent crude futures, the international benchmark, briefly surpassed $80 a barrel for the first time since late June.
Hawkish Fed Signals Weigh on Crypto
Adding to market pressure, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting revealed a deeply divided committee on the path forward for monetary policy. While policymakers noted high uncertainty, the minutes showed that some officials made a case for raising interest rates immediately to combat persistent inflation.
AdMany participants acknowledged scenarios where inflation could remain elevated, citing strong AI-related demand and the conflict in the Middle East as potential drivers. In such cases, the minutes noted, "some policy firming would likely be warranted." Higher interest rate environments typically exert downward pressure on non-yielding, speculative assets like Bitcoin.
Broader Crypto Market Declines
Most major alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, followed Bitcoin's downward trend. The performance of other leading digital assets included:
- Ethereum (ETH): Fell 2.1% to $1,735.98
- XRP (XRP): Dropped 2.2% to $1.0888
- Solana (SOL): Declined by 4.5%
- Dogecoin (DOGE): Slipped 2.1%
Despite the price drop, data from SoSoValue showed that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded three consecutive days of net inflows through Tuesday, suggesting some resilient institutional demand. However, these recent inflows were not enough to offset heavy withdrawals from previous sessions, leaving weekly flows negative overall.
