Background

Bitcoin's price fell more than 2% on Wednesday as escalating military exchanges between the U.S. and Iran soured investor risk appetite. The decline was compounded by minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting, which revealed a divided outlook on monetary policy and the potential for further interest rate hikes.

Geopolitical Tensions Drive Risk-Off Sentiment

Risk assets came under pressure after the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran in retaliation for attacks on commercial oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, Iran responded with strikes of its own, leading to a significant escalation in the region.

President Donald Trump intensified the situation by stating a recent ceasefire was "over" and that the U.S. may reimpose a naval blockade. This flight to safety was reflected in commodity markets, with Brent crude futures briefly surging above $80 a barrel for the first time since late June.

Fed Minutes Signal Policy Uncertainty

Adding to market headwinds, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting highlighted "high uncertainty" among policymakers regarding the economic outlook. The summary showed a central bank evenly divided on the future path of interest rates.

A few participants argued for raising rates immediately, while most saw scenarios where persistent inflation, driven by factors including Middle East conflict, would likely warrant "some policy firming." The prospect of a higher-for-longer interest rate environment typically weighs on speculative, non-yielding assets like cryptocurrencies.

Market Metrics and Broader Declines

The world's largest cryptocurrency fell 2.1% to $62,115.3 by late Wednesday trading, retreating from a high above $64,600 reached earlier in the week. The downturn was widespread across the digital asset market.

  • Ethereum, the second-largest crypto, lost 2.1% to trade at $1,735.98.
  • Other major altcoins like Solana and Cardano shed 4.5% each.

Despite the price drop, data from SoSoValue showed that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded three consecutive days of net inflows. However, this was not enough to offset heavy outflows from previous sessions, leaving weekly flows in negative territory.
