Bitcoin Price Falters as Middle East Tensions, Tech Sell-Off Dampen Risk Appetite

Summary

Bitcoin's price declined on Tuesday as escalating geopolitical tensions following U.S. strikes on Iran and a broad sell-off in technology stocks soured investor sentiment for risk assets. The downturn occurred despite a recent renewal of positive inflows into U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Background

Bitcoin extended its losses on Tuesday, pressured by a broader risk-off sentiment in global markets following U.S. military action in the Middle East and weakness in the technology sector. The world's largest cryptocurrency fell 1.4% to trade at $63,305.0 by late afternoon trading, according to Investing.com data.

Geopolitical Headwinds Mount

Investor sentiment was hit after the U.S. military launched retaliatory strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the strikes were a response to recent attacks on three commercial oil tankers transiting the critical Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had earlier reported the attacks and raised its regional threat level to "severe." The escalation in tensions sent oil prices spiking more than 5%, prompting a flight to safety that weighed on risk-sensitive assets like cryptocurrencies.

Tech Weakness and ETF Flows

Adding to the pressure, a sell-off in technology stocks dampened market enthusiasm. The slide followed preliminary results from Samsung Electronics, which, despite a forecast for record Q2 profit, fueled concerns that the artificial intelligence trade has become overheated.

However, institutional demand for Bitcoin showed signs of resilience. According to data from SoSoValue, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $265.7 million on Monday. This followed $221.7 million in inflows on July 2, reversing a trend from late June that saw nearly $2.4 billion withdrawn from the funds.

Altcoins Track Bitcoin Lower

Most other major cryptocurrencies also traded in negative territory, tracking Bitcoin's decline. The broader market downturn saw significant altcoins post losses:

  • Ethereum (ETH): Fell 1.8% to $1,773.32
  • XRP: Slipped 3.1% to $1.1117
  • Solana (SOL): Lost 2%
  • Cardano (ADA): Dropped 5.5%

Investors are now looking ahead to the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday for further clues on the outlook for U.S. interest rates.
