Background

Bitcoin fell on Tuesday, with its price dipping amid a broader flight from risk assets after the United States launched retaliatory military strikes against Iran. The world's largest cryptocurrency traded down approximately 1.4% to $63,305.0 by late Tuesday trading, as pressure from a sell-off in technology stocks also weighed on investor sentiment.

Geopolitical Risk Pressures Markets

The primary catalyst for the risk-off mood was heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it had launched "powerful strikes" against Iran in response to attacks on three commercial oil tankers transiting the critical Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM described the aggression as "unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire." The news, which followed reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) about the vessel attacks, sent oil prices surging by more than 5% as markets priced in potential supply disruptions and escalating conflict.

Conflicting Signals from Tech and ETF Flows

Adding to the headwinds for digital assets was weakness in the technology sector. A sell-off was triggered following preliminary results and guidance from Samsung Electronics. While the company projected a record second-quarter profit, the outlook fueled investor concerns that the artificial intelligence-driven rally in tech stocks had become overextended.

Despite the negative macroeconomic backdrop, institutional demand for Bitcoin showed signs of recovery. According to data from SoSoValue, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $265.7 million on Monday. This extends a positive trend after $221.7 million in inflows on July 2, reversing a period in late June that saw nearly $2.4 billion in outflows.

Altcoins Follow Bitcoin Lower

The downturn was not isolated to Bitcoin, as most major alternative cryptocurrencies also traded in the red. Key altcoins posted losses, reflecting the widespread caution among market participants:

  • Ethereum (ETH): Fell 1.8% to $1,773.32
  • XRP: Slipped 3.1% to $1.1117
  • Cardano (ADA): Dropped 5.5%
  • Solana (SOL): Lost 2%

Investors are now looking ahead to the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, which will be scrutinized for fresh clues on the central bank's interest rate outlook.
