Background

Bitcoin edged lower on Tuesday amid deteriorating risk appetite among investors, with its price falling to $64,221.3 after briefly dipping below the $64,000 level. The decline in the world's largest cryptocurrency was influenced by fading hopes for a U.S.-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and news of another significant sale from a major corporate holder.

Corporate Disclosures Weigh on Sentiment

Adding to the market pressure, business intelligence firm MicroStrategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) disclosed in a Monday filing that it had sold 1,690 bitcoins for a total of $109 million. The company stated that the proceeds were used to repurchase 1.15 million of its preferred shares.

This marks the fifth time this year MicroStrategy has sold a portion of its Bitcoin holdings. The market generally views these sales as a strategy to raise cash to service its growing debt and dividend commitments, which were largely incurred to finance its massive Bitcoin acquisitions. Following the sale, MicroStrategy's holdings now stand at 840,447 BTC.

In other corporate news, Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ:DJT) reported a net loss of $238.1 million for the second quarter in a Monday SEC filing. The company also disclosed a $360.6 million unrealized loss on its digital asset holdings for the first half of the year, with the fair value of its crypto portfolio declining to $597.7 million.

Altcoins Follow Bitcoin Lower

The broader cryptocurrency market largely tracked Bitcoin's downward movement. Key takeaways include:

  • Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 0.4% to $1,891.81.
  • Other major altcoins, including XRP, Solana (SOL), and Cardano (ADA), also posted losses.
  • BNB was a notable exception, trading 1.8% higher against the trend.

In a separate development, Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT) saw its shares surge nearly 25% in after-hours trading Monday. The jump followed a Bloomberg report that Riot had signed a $9 billion deal to supply computing power to AI lab Anthropic, signaling a strategic pivot toward providing AI infrastructure.
