Background

Bitcoin's price extended its losses on Tuesday, falling amid a broader risk-off turn in global markets. The world's largest cryptocurrency was last trading down 1.4% at $63,305.0, according to Investing.com data, as investors reacted to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a sell-off in technology stocks.

Geopolitical and Market Headwinds

Investor sentiment soured after the U.S. military launched retaliatory strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the strikes were a response to attacks on three commercial oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The development, which caused oil prices to spike more than 5%, prompted a flight to safety and away from speculative assets like cryptocurrencies.

Adding to the negative pressure was a slide in technology stocks, fueled by concerns that the artificial intelligence-driven market rally has become overextended. While Samsung Electronics forecasted a record second-quarter profit, its guidance was not enough to calm investor jitters, which spilled over into the crypto market.

ETF Inflows Offer Limited Support

Despite the negative price action, institutional demand showed some resilience. U.S.-listed spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of $265.7 million on Monday, according to data from SoSoValue. This followed $221.7 million of inflows on July 2.

These recent gains mark a significant reversal from late June, when the same funds saw nearly $2.4 billion in net outflows over several sessions. However, the renewed institutional buying was not sufficient to counteract Tuesday's widespread negative market sentiment. Investors are now looking ahead to the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday for further clues on the monetary policy outlook.

Broader Crypto Market Follows Suit

The downturn was not isolated to Bitcoin, as most major alternative cryptocurrencies also traded lower. The performance of other leading digital assets included:

  • Ethereum (ETH): Fell 1.8% to $1,773.32
  • XRP: Slipped 3.1% to $1.1117
  • Solana (SOL): Lost 2.0%
  • Cardano (ADA): Dropped 5.5%
  • Dogecoin (DOGE): Shed 3.9%
