Bitcoin Hovers Near $64,000 as Geopolitical Tensions, Rate Fears Weigh on Market

Bitcoin's price remained largely stagnant on Monday, continuing a sideways trading pattern from the weekend as a combination of geopolitical risk and concerns over U.S. interest rates kept market sentiment subdued. The leading cryptocurrency is struggling to find upward momentum amid a cautious environment for risk assets.
As of 9:20 AM ET, Bitcoin (BTC) was trading up a marginal 0.4% at $64,733.0, according to Investing.com data. The price action keeps Bitcoin within its recent trading range and significantly below its all-time high, reflecting persistent weakness in the market.
Macro Headwinds Cap Crypto Gains
A primary factor weighing on investor appetite is the escalating tension between the U.S. and Iran following mutual strikes over the weekend. The conflict, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least three U.S. service members, has fueled a spike in oil prices amid fears of shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Rising energy costs are intensifying concerns about a potential resurgence in inflation. This could, in turn, pressure the U.S. Federal Reserve to maintain its hawkish monetary policy or even consider further interest rate hikes later this year. While markets widely expect the Fed to hold rates steady at its July meeting, investors remain wary of any hawkish signals from policymakers. Higher interest rates typically create headwinds for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin.
Saylor Warns Against Proposed Bitcoin Upgrade
AdAdding to market discourse, MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) Chairman and prominent Bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor issued a warning on social media against a proposed software upgrade for the Bitcoin blockchain known as BIP-110.
The proposal aims to temporarily limit the storage of large amounts of non-monetary data, such as Ordinals inscriptions, to refocus the network on its monetary properties. Saylor argued that the proposal, a soft fork, could risk invalidating some blocks and should only be considered for fixing critical flaws, which he stated BIP-110 does not address. Proponents, however, believe the upgrade would help clear superfluous data from the blockchain and reduce the burden on node operators.
Altcoin Market Remains Subdued
The broader cryptocurrency market mirrored Bitcoin's muted performance on Monday, with most major altcoins showing limited movement.
- Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, rose 0.2% to $1,874.05.
- Solana (SOL) gained 0.9%, while XRP was up 0.5%.
- Other major tokens like Cardano (ADA) fell about 1%, while BNB was mostly flat.
- Meme coins also saw little action, with Dogecoin (DOGE) trading unchanged.
