Bitcoin Holds Above $64,000 as Traders Await Federal Reserve Rate Decision

Bitcoin held steady above the $64,000 mark in quiet weekend trading as financial markets braced for the U.S. Federal Reserve's pivotal interest rate decision scheduled for Wednesday. The leading cryptocurrency was trading at approximately $64,486, up about 1% over a 24-hour period, after retreating from a one-month high of over $66,400 seen earlier in the week.
Fed Decision Looms as Market Catalyst
The primary focus for investors is the upcoming announcement from the Federal Reserve. While market consensus broadly anticipates that policymakers will leave the federal funds rate unchanged, traders will be closely scrutinizing the subsequent commentary for signals on future monetary policy, particularly concerning inflation and economic growth.
The cautious sentiment leading up to the event was reflected in the Crypto Fear and Greed Index, which stood at 27, indicating a state of "fear" among market participants. Over the preceding 24 hours, Bitcoin traded within a relatively narrow range between $63,700 and $65,406, underscoring investor hesitancy.
Options Market Signals Bullish Bets
Despite the prevailing caution, activity in the derivatives market suggests some traders are positioning for a post-announcement rally. According to a report from CoinDesk, options traders have accumulated approximately $2.5 billion in notional value of Bitcoin call spreads that are set to expire on July 31.
AdThese positions would become profitable if Bitcoin's price rises toward the $72,000 level by the end of the month, indicating a significant pocket of bullish speculation tied to the outcome of the Fed's meeting.
Altcoins Show Strength
While Bitcoin's price action was subdued, several alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, posted notable gains. Shiba Inu (SHIB) was a standout performer, surging 36% and adding nearly $1 billion to its market capitalization without a specific project-related catalyst. Reports indicate the rally was driven by strong buying demand from South Korea, particularly on the Upbit exchange.
Other major digital assets also saw modest increases. Ether gained over 1.5% to trade near $1,882, while XRP, BNB, and Solana also recorded gains, reflecting a broadly positive, albeit watchful, tone across the wider cryptocurrency market.
