Background

Bitcoin fell more than 2% on Wednesday, slipping below the $63,000 level as escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran soured investor risk appetite. The decline was compounded by minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest meeting, which revealed a deeply divided outlook on future interest rate policy.

By 17:38 ET (21:38 GMT), Bitcoin (BTC) was trading at $62,115.3, a decline of 2.1% for the session, after trading above $64,600 earlier in the week, according to data from Investing.com.

Geopolitical Headwinds Rattle Risk Assets

Risk sentiment took a sharp turn after the U.S. military launched retaliatory strikes against Iran on Tuesday following attacks on three commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with strikes of its own, marking the most significant escalation since an interim peace agreement was signed in mid-June.

President Donald Trump, speaking at a NATO summit, declared the ceasefire was "over" and stated the U.S. might reimpose a naval blockade. The heightened conflict immediately impacted energy markets, with Brent crude futures briefly surging above $80 a barrel for the first time since June 22.

Fed Minutes Signal Policy Uncertainty

Adding to market pressure, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting showed policymakers grappling with high uncertainty. The debate over the path of monetary policy appeared evenly divided, with some participants making a case for raising interest rates immediately.

While many officials noted scenarios where inflation could cool on its own, the minutes stated that "most participants... also pointed to scenarios in which... inflation would remain elevated." In such cases, the report said, "almost all of these participants indicated that some policy firming would likely be warranted." Higher interest rate environments typically exert downward pressure on speculative, non-yielding assets like cryptocurrencies.

Broader Crypto Market Declines

The negative sentiment spread across the digital asset market, with most major altcoins following Bitcoin's downward trajectory.

  • Ethereum (ETH) fell 2.1% to $1,735.98.
  • XRP declined 2.2% to $1.0888.
  • Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA) both shed approximately 4.5%.

Despite the daily price drop, institutional interest showed some resilience. Data from SoSoValue indicated that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a third consecutive day of net inflows on Tuesday, helping to offset heavy withdrawals seen in previous weeks.
