Bitcoin Edges Higher After Senate Setback, but Fed's Hawkish Stance Caps Gains

Summary
Bitcoin continued a modest recovery following the failure of a key crypto bill in the U.S. Senate, but further upside was limited as investors weighed a hawkish interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve.
Bitcoin ticked higher on Thursday, extending a recovery from a legislative setback earlier in the week, though the gains were capped as financial markets digested a hawkish monetary policy update from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency rose 0.7% to $76,498.3 by late afternoon ET, according to Investing.com data. The price action reflects a broader tension between crypto-specific developments and macroeconomic pressures.
Hawkish Fed Weighs on Risk Assets
Investor sentiment across speculative assets, including crypto, was dampened by the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) decision on Wednesday to raise the federal funds rate to a range of 3.75%-4.00%. While the hike was expected, updated projections and commentary from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh struck a hawkish chord.
Warsh re-asserted the central bank's commitment to fighting inflation, telling reporters, "The plain fact is that inflation is too high and has been for too long." According to Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch, the market's negative reaction was driven less by the rate increase itself and more by "the fact that the Fed’s own forecasts now describe this as the start of a sequence rather than a standalone move."
Regulatory Crosscurrents
The market's cautious tone follows a volatile week on the regulatory front. Bitcoin fell more than 3% on Tuesday after the U.S. Senate failed to pass the Clarity Act, a landmark bill to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets, in a narrow 49-50 vote.
AdHowever, the industry received some positive news on Thursday when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) introduced an exemption to allow for the trading of "tokenized" stocks. The new rule provides a five-year exemption from many traditional exchange and dealer registration requirements for platforms and liquidity providers dealing in these blockchain-based securities. Proponents argue the move could help integrate digital assets into mainstream finance by enabling 24/7 trading and instant settlement.
Broader Crypto Market
Most other major cryptocurrencies tracked Bitcoin's modest upward movement on Thursday. Key altcoin performance included:
- Ether (ETH): Rose 1.9% to $2,450.52.
- Solana (SOL): Climbed 2.8%.
- Cardano (ADA): Gained 3.5%.
BNB and XRP also posted small gains, reflecting a tentative recovery across the digital asset space.
