Bitcoin Edges Above $64,000 as Market Eyes Potential Strait of Hormuz Deal

Bitcoin's price ticked higher on Wednesday, extending a mild recovery as broader financial markets reacted to hopes for an imminent diplomatic deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The cryptocurrency remained within a familiar trading range, however, as the sector contends with its own distinct challenges.
By 02:33 ET (06:33 GMT), Bitcoin was up approximately 1% to trade at $64,305.6.
Geopolitical Tailwinds
Market-wide risk appetite improved following a Tuesday evening report from Axios stating that the U.S., Oman, and Iran were in negotiations to announce a deal to reopen the key waterway as soon as Wednesday. This sentiment was bolstered by comments from U.S. President Donald Trump in a Tuesday interview, where he described a deal as “imminent.”
This optimism, which has driven oil prices lower, has provided a tailwind for risk assets. However, reports from Iranian media have cautioned that a deal could be delayed, and Tehran has maintained it is negotiating through mediators in Oman rather than directly with the U.S.
Cautious Crypto Sentiment
Despite the positive macro environment, gains in digital assets were muted. Investors have recently shown a preference for other risk-on plays, such as artificial intelligence stocks, which are perceived to have clearer fundamentals and have been supported by strong recent earnings.
AdThe cryptocurrency market is also navigating internal pressures, including the fallout from a recent high-profile hack and continued selling from the major corporate holder Strategy, according to the source material. Bitcoin remains roughly 50% below its record high from October.
ETF Flows and Altcoin Performance
On a more positive note for the sector, capital flows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have shown improvement. After two months of heavy outflows, ETFs saw net inflows of $172.4 million in July, a figure that has already been surpassed in August with $381.6 million in total inflows to date.
Performance across the broader altcoin market was mixed, reflecting Bitcoin's uncertain direction:
- Ether (ETH): +0.6% to $1,868.57
- Solana (SOL): +0.8%
- BNB: +1.8%
- XRP: -0.5%
- Cardano (ADA): -2.2%
